Repossessing a Dining Room Set

By kiki

Repossessing a dining room set: In the mid-1950's a friend of mine, Coy, and I were working part-time at a furniture store, Rainbow's Furniture, that was on Whittier Blvd in East Los Angeles, delivering and yes repossessing furniture, one night the owner, Roger, send Coy and me out to repossess a dining room set.

We got to the house in Whittier, CA. and we knocked on the door; a man answered the door; I told him we were from Rainbow's Furniture and that we were there to repossess the dining room set, he invited us in and asked us if we could be kind enough to wait while they finished their dinner. I looked into the dining room and saw his wife and two small kids sitting around the table eating; I turned and looked at Coy and said to him, "let's get out of here" we told the man, "finish your dinner, we'll be back some other day." So we got back to the store, and Roger, the owner, asked us, "Well?" "nobody was home Roger; we'll try tomorrow night again,"

After that, every time Roger would send us to repossess the dining set, we would go to a bar and shoot pool and down a few brews; a couple of hours later, we would go back to the store and tell Roger "nobody was home."

I would like to think that the man paid off the dining room set because he looked like a good decent man that was just going through a rough period.

    1. The man seemed like a decent man that had just hit a rough patch, why make it rougher on him and his family, beside Roger could afford it..
